Another great book is A Birding Guide to Humboldt County. This invaluable guidebook was written by local ornithologist and birding guide, Kenneth Burton, and designed by Arcata-based graphic designer and photographer, Leslie Scopes Anderson. It links well-known and obscure birding sites, some of them only recently opened to the public, into 25 routes spanning the entire county. The book features gorgeous photographs by Anderson, Burton, and others as well as detailed maps and directions and aids for navigating by GPS. For more details, including purchasing, read more...

The Marbled Murrelet is a small seabird bird that nests in the redwood forests. The numbers of Marbled Murrelet began to decline in the late 1800's when its nesting trees became a focus of the logging industry.

Using the image of the Marbled Murrelet in our logo reflects our mission:

  • act to promote a wise, balanced, responsible, and ethical use of natural systems on a local, national, and global scale; and

  • protect the biotic and abiotic components of local, national, and global natural systems.
