President’s Message

Thank you
As I reflect back upon the two years I’ve served as President of our chapter, I probably have not said ‘Thank You’, enough in person to the people who deserved it. I have enjoyed my time as president. I was a bit shaky at first so I would like to say a few thanks to C.J. Ralph and Dick Laursen for helping me with some general rules of order for conducting meetings. Thank you Hal Genger and Jim Clark for providing guidance as past presidents. Many board members have longevity and hold several positions. For example, Jim Clark has also been doing a great job as our conservation chair. Gary Bloomfield does the art layout for our meeting notices, coffee mugs, and tee shirts. Gary also represents us with the Arcata Main Street which sponsors Godwit Days, coordinates other artists for our banquets, and now shares duties with CJ representing us with the NEC, filling in behind Mark Andre. Frances Madrone is doing a great job as our treasurer. Jay Sooter, Louise Bacon-Ogden, and Rob Hewitt were instrumental in purchasing and distributing bird-related books to our local libraries. Louise has worked hard with our education committee through her outreach to the community and with our scholarship program. Jay Sooter along with Sue Leskiw have worked hard with our membership outreach.
Luke George brings a connection to the University and has helped planning our programs, our last banquet, and the fall birdathon. Ron LeValley deserves special thanks for being program chair for a decade. Ron also has helped through many years publishing our Sandpiper, along with Hal Genger, David Fix and Tom Leskiw. Stan Harris has been compiling our observation records for years.
Special thanks go to our secretaries. Both Elias Elias and Sue Leskiw have done exceptional jobs. Sue has really helped make connections work. Elias will become our new president in February and will continue those connections. Elias, along with Elyse Kelly worked hard on putting together our field trips. Jude Power took on the task several years ago of starting monthly field trips at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge each fall through spring as a complement to our weekly walks at Arcata Marsh. There is not enough space here to list each person who has helped docent walks at Arcata Marsh, but thank you all!
Other people who work behind the scenes deserve mention. Linda Long is our web page editor. We have a lot of hard workers on our board and working with our chapter. I hope I have not forgotten to mention anyone, but I’m sure I have. Thank you all.
