President’s Column

March 2000

First, I would like to thank our members for attending the Audubon Banquet to hear Bernie Krause talk about the sounds of nature. I was amazed to hear the variety of sounds from ants singing, to thunderstorms at the equator as recorded in polar regions, to the sounds of shifting sands. His ending statements of the chorus /counter-chorus interactions of various birds, frogs, insects, and bats and the effects that noise pollution may have on animal communication is a problem that needs further study and consideration in land management decisions.

During my term in office, I would like to make "Connections" the theme. This is a wide-open topic, but some ideas are connections with other local groups with similar interests, connecting wildlife areas into a network, connecting with our constituents, to name a few possibilities. I would also like to see wise use of our sanctuary fund, and will seek information about good investments for the fund.

Being a member organization of the Northcoast Environmental Center, we need to build our ties there by ensuring that information gets passed back and forth effectively. Our primary link is our representative Mark Andre. We can also link with other organizations such as the Arcata Marsh Project Committee, the California North Coast Chapter of The Wildlife Society, Humboldt Bay Watershed Council, other conservation organizations, and share information and ideas. Let us also connect with our past, learn from it, and work towards the future.
