President's Column
March 1999
by Hal Genger

Welcome to another edition of the Sandpiper. The days are
getting longer and we should be reaching the end of major foul weather systems. I am
looking forward to going outside without layers of warm clothes and raingear! Our area
seems to take the brunt of both El Niņo and La Niņa years. Hopefully, the sun will shine
on the 1st Annual Aleutian Goose Festival in Del Norte County. Mark your
calendars for this event on March 26-27-28. This will be a great time for
beginning-to-avid birders to get back out into the field. A variety of workshops,
seminars, and field trips will be offered. Ocean, driftboat, and kayak excursions will
also be available. For more information contact the Crescent City- Del Norte Chamber of
Commerce, 1-800-343-8300, or
By the time most of you get this newsletter, our new board members will
be installed. Newly elected members are: President-elect - Chet Ogan, Secretary - Elias
Elias (re-elected), Board members - Louise Bacon-Ogden, Luke George, Tom Leskiw
(re-elected) and Jay Sooter. Hal Genger and Jim Clark will remain as president and
immediate-past president respectively, for the next year. Good luck to all of you and
thank you for volunteering your time to Redwood Region Audubon Society.
