Our Mission and Purpose

Our Mission is to

a) act to promote a wise, balanced, responsible, and ethical use of natural systems on a local, national, and global scale; and

b) protect the biotic and abiotic components of local, national, and global natural systems.

The purposes and objectives of this corporation shall be to engage in such educational, scientific, investigative, literary, historical, philanthropic and charitable pursuits as may be part of the stated purposes of the National Audubon Society, of which this corporation shall function as a Chapter. However, this corporation shall be a separate and autonomous organization and shall operate under the guidance, rather than the control, of the National Audubon Society.

Redwood Region Audubon Society is a local chapter of the National Audubon Society. You can read our name statement here.

Our Activities

The  Redwood Region Audubon Society (RRAS) was founded in 1969 . It encompasses Humboldt, Del Norte and western Trinity Counties in northwest California.

We advocate for the protection of birds and other wildlife by supporting local conservation efforts.

Redwood Region Audubon Society advocates for education, sponsoring over 100 field trips annually, monthly presentations, and other events related to birds and other wildlife each year. These range from our weekly bird walks in the Arcata Marsh, to talks and field trips.

We publish a monthly publication, The Sandpiper, that can be found on the rras.org website.

Anyone can join Redwood Region Audubon Society. Your membership sponsors our newsletter, webpage, regular monthly programs,  conservation meetings, field trips, bird surveys, and a bird alert hotline.

RRAS is a  volunteer, nonprofit organization with about 500 members that rely on the energy and commitment of those members to be a strong and effective local conservation organization.

RRAS is governed by a Board of Directors of between 9 and 13 members, who serve 2-year terms. Elections are held each January. It also has active committees that handle conservation, education, field trips, finance, membership, nominating, programs, publicity, and publications.
