California Bird Atlas

Creating California's First State-Wide Breeding Bird Atlas

Redwood Region Audubon Society is a founding partner in a 5 year effort to document the breeding distribution of every bird species throughout the state! Information on this exciting project is available at the California Bird Atlas Project website.
We are seeking assistance from the public - that's you! - in obtaining as much information
as possible about the breeding birds of our region.
Interested in participating? Here are some fun ways to start:
  1.  Let us know if you have a nest of any wild bird on your property and are willing to have a chapter representative pay you a visit to verify the species of bird and the status of the nest. Please write to us through the Contact Us! link and provide your address and, if you're willing, phone number so that we can have the appropriate person contact you to arrange a visit.
  2.  If you're just learning about the project, join a birding walk to learn about it. These are always fun, you'll meet interesting people, and probably learn a lot, too! Rob Fowler is leading special California Bird Atlas project walks every other Thursday through August. Our walks are free, and everyone is welcome!
  3. If you use ebird, join the California Bird Atlas project. When you go birding, you will have the option of documenting breeding behaviors, and all you sightings will be added to the database.
  4. Document birds in remote places. Many areas of Humboldt, Del Norte, and Trinity counties are full of birds, and not frequented by birders. California has been divided into blocks, and data on birds in each block is important. So, if you wander a bit, check out the list of Quandrangles Lacking Atlas Coverage, and be one of the first to fill in the blanks!
  5. Check out fun photos taken recently by local birders! Take your own, and share them with the birding community.
